So I decided to reread "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," just in case the Vogons ever decide to demolish Earth to make room for an unnecessary bypass. Since the Guide very helpfully recommends not panicking, I'm not.
You know, I read books like "The Hitchhiker's Guide" and wonder what was going on the the author's mind when they wrote it. I'd love to ask Douglas Adams why he chose 42 as the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything. However, he died in 2001, so I can't.
If I ever had the chance to interview Jasper Fforde, one of the most original writers I've come across (thanks, Andrew, for recommending him), once I was done freaking out, I would jump at the chance. I'd love to know how he came up with Thursday Next and her exceptional abilities. I can kind-of relate to her and her difficulties in book-jumping. While I don't literally disappear into a book that I'm reading, I do focus on the story to the exclusion of everything going on around me.
That's something I've always been able to do, whether at home, in the car (not while I'm driving, though) or at a restaurant. Once I crack open my book, I'm gone. I keep a peripheral eye open at the restaurant, though, so the server doesn't have to hit me over the head to set my plate on the table. And I need to make a disclaimer on audio books. If the book is good enough, I may not pay very good attention to where I am. Just ask Mom about "Seabiscuit."
(For those of you who aren't able to ask Mom, we listened to "Seabiscuit" on our way to the Outer Banks several years ago. And neither one of us remembers crossing Kentucky. We still get teased about listening to audio books, but they're a great way to pass the time.)
I had an idea for reading art, but I'm not an artist. It would be cool to have a picture of someone reading, but the main focus would be the reader's eyes. Reflected there would be scenes from the book - like the reader was watching a movie on the page. I can see the picture in my mind, but alas, my drawing skills are limited to stick people.
So if you ever find me with my nose in a book, which you probably will, good luck getting my attention. And see if what I'm reading is reflected in my eyes.
