Writing about work again

They (whoever "they" are) say to write what you know. So I'm going to write about something I know all too well - my job.

I work a lot. Not just all day, but many evenings and weekends, too. As you may know, I go to all kinds of sporting events - football, volleyball, softball, golf, soccer in the fall, basketball and wrestling in the winter, golf, soccer, baseball, track, softball in the spring. Many of those events are scheduled in the evenings, outside of "normal" work hours. Some weeks I don't have any full evenings at home. It's a good thing I don't have any pets - they'd die from neglect!

People ask me how I do it and why I do it. How do I do it? I don't really know. There are times I'd like to just hide someplace for a couple days, not talking to anyone or even thinking about talking to people. Believe it or not, I'm more of an introvert than an extrovert, so having to be social and sociable for long periods of time is exhausting.

Why do I do it? Because I love what I do. And I have spent time thinking about my career choice, and I really can't think of anything else I want to do.

I've always wanted to be a writer. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to write things. Sometimes when I was little, Mom would let me "write" on the typewriter. Little did she know where that would lead. One of the first things I remember writing was a haiku poem about a doll I'd gotten for my birthday in second grade. Why haiku? Well, one of the upper grades at Macon (a one-room school I attended through second grade) was studying haiku in their English class. It sounded easy enough. All you had to do was count the syllables in each line, and I could do that. So I gave it a try.

I have a dolly
Her name is Yoshi darling
I really like her

Not bad for a second grader. And that was the beginning of the end.

P.S. Happy 11th birthday to my nephew, Avery. I can't believe you're 11 already. It doesn't seem like you should be counting your age using your toes. And happy 5th birthday on Saturday to another nephew, Ryan. You can't be five yet! That's a full hand! I hope both of you have/had wonderful birthdays. I love you both very much.
