Pace begins to slow

The pace of my schedule is beginning to slow, which is kind of nice. State wrestling is done, and my wrestlers did very well. I had seven guys from four different schools in the finals, which is the most I've ever had. Four of them were champions, with one winning his fourth state title. That's a pretty impressive - and rare - achievement. He became the 25th wrestler in state history to win four. And one of my teams was the runner-up in its class. All told, it was a great tournament for my area.

With basketball, we're to the point of the seasons where it's lose and you're done. Of the 10 boys' and girls' teams I personally cover, eight have ended their seasons. For some, it's definitely disappointing. They had big dreams and were ready to keep playing. For other, though, it's OK that the season is over. Some of my teams really struggled to find any success on the basketball court this season. I try to find positives for each sports story I write, but there comes a point where it's almost easier to say "this team just isn't very good." But that's the challenge.

So I'm down to just two teams left. The girls' state basketball tournament starts tomorrow, and the girls' team that qualified gets to play the top-seeded team in the class. It will be a tough game, I'm sure, but anything can happen. That's why you play. The boys' state tournament starts next Thursday.

And don't forget to change your clocks on Saturday night. Spring forward, so we'll all be tired for church.
