Ticket to ride

My family likes playing table games when we get together. Sometimes we'll play board games. Sometimes we'll play card games. And sometimes we like to just sit and talk.

My brother and sister-in-law are usually the ones to introduce new games to the rest of us. Today was no different. I played a game called "Ticket to Ride" for the first time tonight. It's a game of luck, strategy and flexibility - luck in that what you do depends on the cards you draw, strategy in that what you do depends on the cards you're looking for and flexibility in that what you do depends on your willingness to change your route.

As I said, I'd never played this game before. I'd never even heard of it outside of the song by the Carpenters. And I lost, which is typical for me when playing games. I would've done better quoting the song.

It was a fun game, though. It's one that kids can play, too, which makes it more fun for a family. It involves trains and cities and figuring out the best way to get from here to there.

On the other hand, "Ticket to Ride" by the Carpenters, was one of the great songs of the 1970s. We had the Carpenters' greatest hits record (yes, the actual vinyl) and about listened it to death. We knew all the words to all the songs, including "Ticket to Ride," and we sang along every time we played the record. And we didn't care.

We did not sing that song during tonight's game. We probably could have put together a soundtrack of train songs to play, but we were so busy trying to figure out where to put our train cars that we didn't have time to sing. Not like all the guys who earned their living working on the railroad all the livelong day.
