It's the time of year when we indulge in retrospectives and prognostications. We review the year that's past and look forward to the blank slate that is the next year. We think about things we wanted to accomplish and didn't and put them on the list of things to still do.
Well, I have a few things on my list that I hope to accomplish in 2014.
1. No more late birthday cards. You'd think this would be easy, but birthdays tend to sneak up on me far more quickly than I'd like. And I'm not talking about my birthday. Everyone else's do the same. Birthdays are just a sneaky contraption, even when I've got them written on my calendar.
2. Practice regularly. Not just during the months I'm playing for church, but also during the months I'm not. I tend to not keep up regular practice times when I don't have to prepare for church services. It's easy to justify. You know, I don't have to play this Sunday, so I don't need to practice.
3. Read more. You'd think this would be simple to do for someone who loves to read in the first place. It's just finding the time, which seems to be in shorter and shorter supply. Maybe I'll invest in audio books for my many road trips.
4. Write more. Not just for the paper, that should go without saying. I'm talking about other things like letters or a journal or something. I've been thinking about this for the last couple years and haven't done anything about it. So, this will (hopefully) be the year that I do.
5. Find the good in people and situations. It's much easier to find the bad and to complain about everything you perceive as negative. Finding the good lifts everyone's mood - including yours.
While I may or may not accomplish any of these, it's good to have goals. Without goals, how would we know if we're moving in the right direction? Sometimes, though, we set unreachable goals and then get discouraged when we don't meet them. So, make sure your goals can be achieved. Otherwise, they're just words that don't mean anything.
Happy 2014, everyone.
